Teeth are required to withstand a lot of impact every day and they can get damaged. Cracks, chips, staining and other minor cosmetic issues can regularly happen to teeth. Porcelain veneers are strong, wafer-thin porcelain or ceramic shells that are custom-made to fit the surface of your teeth. This long-lasting treatment looks fantastic and conserves as much natural tooth as possible. Ridgway Dental offers quality dental veneers in Wimbledon.
What are Veneers?
Veneers are artificial additions to the teeth. They are applied to otherwise healthy teeth that must be prepared but don’t require extraction. Compared to other ways of fixing problematic teeth, veneers are relatively less invasive. Veneers are attached by shaving off a small part of the enamel from the surface of the tooth. This area is where dental glue joins the tooth and the veneer piece.
Broken, chipped or gaping teeth don’t immediately require dental implants or braces. In some cases, our dentist can suggest the installation of dental veneers, depending on the severity of the case. These long-lasting solutions are minimally invasive and are easy to maintain.
Why Porcelain Veneers?
- Originally, resin was a popular choice for veneers. However, since porcelain is more durable, more resistant to staining and follow the natural shine of healthy teeth, they are now the material of choice for veneers.
- Porcelain veneers are reliable and they camouflage well. In addition, they are also semi-permanent solutions. A veneer usually last between 7 to 15 years before they need to be replaced.
- Sometimes a single veneer is placed to hide a dark tooth or to repair a broken front tooth but with a smile makeover we place multiple veneers – usually between 6 and 10.We also repair, maintain and replace worn-out veneers.
The process of Veneer placement
Veneers can require two or more trips to the dentist, depending on the complexity of the work needed and the plan built by your Wimbledon Dentist. To give you an overview of the process you can expect the following:
- Consultation – The dentist will examine your mouth and check your teeth. He or she will verify that veneers are right for you.
- Planning – Your dentist will take a digital impression of your teeth and have a ‘wax up’ made which is a model of your proposed new smile. You can trial this directly in your mouth to view the potential result.
- Preparation – Depending on the alignment of your teeth , a thin layer of the enamel may need to be recontoured from your teeth and a digital scan taken. In some cases, anaesthesia is used to numb the area before this process. This digital scan is sent to an industry leading lab.
- Cementation – The veneers will tried in your mouth and fitted with a special adhesive
